Oncological and post-resection reconstruction of bone defects

Once the surgeon has determined the resection strategy, we carry out the digital planning and design patient-specific reconstructive components. Bonabyte does not treat the oncological disease and does not determine the extent of resection.

Devices and tasks

What Bonabyte designs

Bone defect reconstruction

Patient-specific components to replace fragments after resection.

Maxillofacial components

Replacement of facial skeleton segments, reconstruction plates, guides.

Joint components

Oncological joint components and articular surface replacement.

Pelvis and acetabulum

Constructs for pelvic reconstruction after resection, with porous titanium zones.

Resection guides

Transferring the resection plan to the operating room and positioning the fragments.

Anatomical models

Models for planning and for checking the fit intraoperatively.

Data and planning

CT, and MRI if required

For an oncological case, full coverage of the segment matters and, if required, an MRI to visualise the tumour in the same coordinates as the CT.

  • MSCT per protocol, primary axial DICOM
  • MRI (if required) — agreed separately
  • Planning the resection lines and fragment positions
  • Calculating fixation points based on bone density and surgical access
BonaPlanner: planning the osteotomy and mandibular reconstruction
Resection and reconstruction planning: osteotomy lines and plate positions are agreed with the surgeon before surgery

A correct CT scan speeds up planning and reduces rework. Download the protocol for this speciality and include a link to the DICOM when you send it.

FAQ

FAQ

Bone defect reconstruction and repair after resection: maxillofacial components, joint components, constructs for pelvic and acetabular reconstruction, and restoration of load-bearing function and anatomy.

In oncological cases, a fine-increment MRI in the same coordinates as the CT may be required to visualise the tumour. This service is agreed separately and is not part of standard segmentation.

Screw positions and lengths are planned during 3D modelling based on bone density and surgical access, and are agreed with the surgical team.

What you should know

Limits of what is possible

Bonabyte designs and manufactures the device according to the treating physician's plan. Medical decisions are made by the surgeon.

What we can do
  • plan the reconstruction following the resection defined by the surgeon
  • design the replacement component
  • prepare resection guides
  • manufacture the device once the design is approved
What we cannot determine without the physician and the source data
  • the diagnosis and disease stage
  • resection volume and margins
  • the treatment approach
  • the prognosis of the clinical outcome
  • the medical indications for surgery

An oncology case?

Send us a CT (and an MRI if required) — an engineer will prepare the resection plan and the construct.

The information on this website is intended for healthcare professionals and does not constitute medical advice, a public offer or a guarantee of clinical outcome. Bonabyte devices are custom-made medical devices designed for a specific clinical task; their applicability depends on the CT data, the anatomy, the condition of the soft tissues, the surgical access and the operative plan. The final decision on the use of a device is made by the treating physician. Contraindications exist and an individual assessment of the clinical situation is required.
